Unveiling a Timeless Treasure: The Waldorf Cocktail

Fri, Apr 05, 24  |  rye whiskey cocktails

The cocktail world boasts a rich history, filled with forgotten classics waiting to be rediscovered. Enter the Waldorf Cocktail, a sophisticated pre-Prohibition era drink that's making a comeback. This elegant libation, believed to be invented at New York's iconic Waldorf Astoria Hotel, is a symphony of subtle yet complex flavors.

Aromatic Allure

The Waldorf Cocktail is all about balance and nuance. Rye whiskey, known for its spicy and peppery notes, forms the base.  Dry vermouth adds a touch of herbal complexity and dryness. A hint of absinthe, with its licorice-like aroma, adds a touch of mystery and depth. A dash of Angostura bitters ties everything together with notes of spice and citrus.

Here's what you'll need to create your own Waldorf Cocktail:

  • 2 oz Rye Whiskey
  • ¾ oz Dry Vermouth
  • ¼ oz Absinthe (or substitute)
  • 2 Dashes Angostura Bitters
  • Lemon Twist (for garnish)

Instructions:

  1. Fill a mixing glass with ice and let it sit for a minute to chill. Discard the ice before adding the ingredients.
  2. Pour the absinthe into your chilled mixing glass and swirl it gently to coat the inside. Discard the excess absinthe – a small amount goes a long way in this drink!
  3. Pour in the rye whiskey, dry vermouth, and Angostura bitters.
  4. Stir gently for about 15 seconds to chill and dilute the drink.
  5. Strain into a chilled coupe glass.
  6. Express the oils from the lemon twist by gently squeezing it over the drink and then add it as a garnish.

Tips & Tricks:

  • Absinthe Substitutes: If you can't find absinthe, Pernod or a touch of anise extract (literally a drop or two) can be used in a pinch, but the flavor profile will be slightly different.

  • Whiskey Matters: Rye whiskey with a bit of spice will complement the other ingredients best. Explore different rye whiskeys to find your favorite for this cocktail.

  • A Touch of Sweetness: If you prefer a slightly sweeter drink, you can add a bar spoon of simple syrup before stirring.

So, ditch the sugary cocktails and embrace the elegance of the Waldorf Cocktail. With its complex flavors and historical pedigree, it's the perfect way to unwind and experience a taste of sophistication, past and present. Cheers!
