Rosemary Margarita: A Twist on a Classic

Wed, Jun 26, 24  |  tequila cocktails

The Rosemary Margarita adds a unique herbal touch to the traditional margarita, creating a sophisticated and refreshing summer cocktail. Here's how to make it:

Ingredients (Single serving):

  • 1 1/2 ounces tequila (blanco or silver)
  • 3/4 ounce fresh lime juice
  • 1/2 ounce rosemary simple syrup (recipe below)
  • Rosemary sprig, for garnish

Rosemary Simple Syrup (makes about 1 cup):

  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2-3 sprigs fresh rosemary

Instructions:

  1. In a small saucepan, combine water, sugar, and rosemary sprigs. Heat over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until the sugar dissolves. Bring to a simmer and cook for 5 minutes. Remove from heat and let steep for at least 30 minutes, or up to overnight, for a stronger rosemary flavor. Strain the syrup into a jar or container, discarding the rosemary sprigs. This simple syrup can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.
  2. If desired, run a lime wedge around the rim of a margarita glass and dip it in coarse salt or a rosemary sugar rim (made by combining granulated sugar and chopped fresh rosemary).
  3. In a cocktail shaker filled with ice, add tequila, lime juice, and rosemary simple syrup. Shake vigorously for about 15 seconds, or until the outside of the shaker feels frosty cold.
  4. Strain the margarita into your prepared glass (with or without salt rim).
  5. Garnish your creation with a fresh rosemary sprig.

Tips:

  • Use freshly squeezed lime juice for the brightest flavor.
  • If you don't have rosemary simple syrup or prefer a less sweet drink, you can use ¾ ounce of agave nectar or simple syrup instead. Adjust the amount to your taste preference.
  • Don't have rosemary simple syrup? Muddle a sprig of rosemary in the shaker with the other ingredients for a subtle rosemary infusion. Just remember to remove the sprig before straining.
  • For a smoky twist, use mezcal instead of tequila.
  • Use leftover rosemary simple syrup in cocktails like mojitos, gin and tonics, or even homemade lemonade for a subtle herbal touch.

Enjoy this delightful and refreshing Rosemary Margarita!
