The Oaxaca Old Fashioned: A Smoky Twist on a Classic

Wed, Feb 21, 24  |  tequila cocktails

Embark on a flavor journey to Mexico with the Oaxaca Old Fashioned, a unique twist on the iconic cocktail. This recipe combines the smooth warmth of reposado tequila with the smoky essence of mezcal, creating a complex and satisfying drink.

Ingredients:

  • 1 ½ oz Reposado Tequila (preferably El Tesoro Reposado)
  • ½ oz Mezcal (preferably Espadin)
  • ½ tsp Agave Nectar
  • 2 dashes Chocolate Bitters (Angostura bitters work too)
  • 1 large ice cube
  • Orange peel, for garnish

Instructions:

  1. Chill your glass: Fill an old-fashioned glass with ice and let it sit for a minute. Discard the ice and pat the glass dry with a clean towel.

  2. Muddle the sweetness: Place the agave nectar in the bottom of the glass and add a few orange peel twists. Lightly muddle with a bar spoon to express the oils.

  3. Combine the spirits: Add the reposado tequila and mezcal to the glass.

  4. Introduce the complexity: Add the bitters and stir gently for about 20 seconds until well combined and chilled.

  5. Embrace the smoke: Express the oils from a fresh orange peel over the drink by holding it above the surface and squeezing gently while lighting the peel for a moment (optional).

  6. Garnish and savor: Add the large ice cube to the glass and discard the orange peel. Garnish with a fresh orange peel twist and enjoy the smoky symphony of flavors.

Tips:

  • For a sweeter or smokier profile, adjust the amount of agave nectar or mezcal to your preference.
  • Don't have chocolate bitters? Angostura bitters are a classic substitute.
  • Play with the garnish! Try a lime wedge, star anise, or even a sprinkle of cinnamon for a different twist.
  • Use high-quality tequila and mezcal for the best flavor experience.
  • Make it ahead of time! Combine the ingredients except the ice and orange peel in a mixing glass, stir, and store in the refrigerator for up to a day. Assemble when ready to serve.

Remember to drink responsibly and enjoy your taste bud adventure to Oaxaca!
