The Bloody Maria: A Spicy Tequila Twist on a Classic Brunch Cocktail

Wed, Feb 21, 24  |  tequila cocktails

The Bloody Mary, a savory and satisfying brunch time beverage, gets a south-of-the-border makeover with this recipe for the Bloody Maria. This tequila-based version swaps out vodka for a smoky agave kick, while still retaining the familiar flavors of tomato juice, zesty spices, and a vibrant garnish.

Ingredients:

  • 2 oz Tequila Blanco
  • 4 oz Tomato Juice
  • 1/2 oz Fresh Lemon Juice
  • 1/2 tbsp Prepared Horseradish (to taste)
  • 4 dashes Worcestershire Sauce
  • 2 dashes Tabasco Sauce
  • 2 dashes Tapatio Hot Sauce (optional, for extra heat)
  • 1 pinch Celery Salt
  • 1 pinch Ground Black Pepper

Instructions:

  1. Rim the glass: Pour some celery salt onto a small plate. Rub the rim of a highball glass with a lime wedge, then dip it into the celery salt to coat the rim. Fill the glass with ice.

  2. Combine the ingredients: In a shaker, add the tequila, tomato juice, lemon juice, horseradish, Worcestershire sauce, Tabasco sauce, Tapatio sauce (if using), celery salt, and black pepper.

  3. Shake and strain: Fill the shaker with ice and shake well. Strain the mixture into the prepared glass.

  4. Get creative with garnishes: This is where the Bloody Maria shines! Get creative with your garnishes. The classic combo includes a lime wedge and a celery stalk, but feel free to add other options like cucumber spears, sweet pepper slices, jalapeno slices, or even a sprinkle of queso fresco for a savory touch.

Tips:

  • Adjust the spices to your taste. Start with the suggested amounts of hot sauce and horseradish, then add more to taste if you prefer a spicier drink.
  • For a smoky flavor, use a mezcal instead of tequila.
  • If you don't have a shaker, you can simply stir the ingredients in a glass with ice.
  • Get creative with your garnishes! Use what you have on hand and have fun experimenting.

Enjoy your delicious and refreshing Bloody Maria! Remember to drink responsibly and never drink and drive.
